SOBRA CHILD BIKE OR FAILURE
Title: Needless to bike or missing child Country: Cambodia Location: Around Battambang Date: April 2009
Life in Battambang is hard, very hard. The lack of livelihood in this area of Cambodia is more worrying than the rest of this devastated country. Children are the weakest part of this cruel society, used to exploit their children from birth. Many of these rural children afraid to look at the few foreigners who are not separated from their mothers to browse or receive any toy. In somewhat larger populations, such as Battambang, the relationship with the tourists is very different, children practice the words of English they have learned at school waving and asking any foreigner who's friendly. Do not ask for anything, just want acceptance, a smile, a contact with someone else. In Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, the exploitation of children is very serious. Many seem to have forgotten that children receive the parental mistreatment. Only when you try to get a laugh with a game, while doubts whether you should give them money, you can guess which carry a very special child inside. Cambodian children are special, different from all we have known. Unfortunately life is very cruel to them.
The boy in the photo, the bike ride with family members, we are ignored, goes in search of a group of children playing in the area. We were astonished by observing the ease with which he handles a bike that would stand up only a challenge for many adults. Do not wear shoes, just bring clothes, but at least enjoy a moment of being a child, which is an achievement for someone his age in Cambodia.
